Hyperscale Data Centers Surging Globally
Synergy Research Group revealed that the number of large, hyperscale data centers rose by 11% in 2018 with the prediction that the total number may reach 430 internationally by year end 2019. The US market accounted for approximately 40% of the major cloud and internet data centers globally. Collectively, China, Japan, the UK, Australia and Germany account for 30% of the total large data centers.
The broadest data center footprints are the leading cloud providers including Microsoft, Google, Amazon (AWS), and IBM. Google and Amazon opened the most new hyperscale data centers in 2018 accounting for nearly 50% of the total. Other companies with significant data center presence and growth includes Oracle, Alibaba, Apple, Facebook, Twitter, EBay,Yahoo, Baidu and Tencent.
The new data centers were both developed by the hyperscale cloud companies and leased from data center owner/developers such as the large data center REIT sector.
The Syngery Research report is based upon an overview of the data center footprint of 20 of the major cloud and internet operators.
