Data Center Real Estate - The Year of the Pandemic
Data center real estate acquisition activity for the full year of 2020 yielded approximately $1.7 Billion of real estate transactions totaling 5,540,000 total square feet. In comparison, full year 2019 total activity was $2.763 Billion of transactions and 7,989,000 total square feet.
Total data center real estate volume was down likely due to the Covid-19 pandemic and related delays in consummating transactions. Overall, the data center market remains very healthy with a record year of leasing in 2020 and pandemic fueled online business activity. Everything from the rapid transition to enhanced network and cloud solutions, work from home, Zoom, Netflix, and greatly enchanced E-Commerce activity drove growth inside the data center walls.
